WP4 New generation of electronics with low environmental impact

Objectives

The scope of WP4 is the development of technologies that enable a new generation of electronics, which drastically reduces the generation of e-waste along the products lifecycle. This objective will be approached by 5 tasks dedicated to tackle central components of conventional electronics, which have major impacts on existing and future e-waste production. The innovations within these tasks will individually as well as synergistically lead to advancements in green ECS, particularly in the reduction of e-waste, addressing all 6Rs, as will exemplarily be shown by the use cases. Major advancements will be achieved starting at the material level, over production processes, second-life implementations, lifetime increase as well as recycling. New concepts of modularity and multi-use will be implemented to avoid electronic products, materials etc. (Refuse), minimise the resources needed by utilising innovative designs or manufacturing technologies (Reduce), develop new ways to use things via multi- use strategies (Reuse), develop new ways things are made to facility dismantling (Recycle) and, finally, develop and employ biodegradable components (Rot). Consequently, the outcomes of EECONE will provide a wide range of tools, methods and technologies toward the implementation of cradle-to-cradle products. Overall, through the outcomes of this WP, we aim for a reduction of e-waste in the areas addressed by EECONE, e-waste reduction >25% achieved thanks to introduction of new materials, new technologies and/or new designs (prior usage Reduce, Reliable) and e-waste reduction >25% thanks to Lifetime and usageS extensionS (during and after first usage Repair, Repurpose, Reuse).
